Woodys Lunchbox Chocolate Hazelnut Tarts Recipe

Woodys Lunchbox Chocolate Hazelnut Tarts from Disney 1

We are a Nutella family.  So these hazelnut tarts are right up our alley.

They are easy to eat as hand-held snacks.

My kids love them.

You can also substitute alternate fillings if you don’t want hazelnut.  Try strawberry, raspberry, or apricot jam.  Maybe cran-apple for the fall or possibly some sore of pumpkin fillings…

The possibilities are endless.

Level of Complexity of the recipe: Easy-Medium

Ingredients

Chocolate-Hazelnut Tart:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 3 sticks of cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons of coarse salt
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 3 eggs (2 eggs for the recipe, 1 egg to brush the outside of the dough)
  • 10 tablespoons of water
  • 1/2 cup of Nutella (chocolate-hazelnut spread)

Icing:

    • 1 cup confectioners sugar
    • 2 tablespoons of milk
    • 1 teaspoon of lemon juice

Garnish:

  • 4 strips of bacon, cooked and crumbled

Directions

For Chocolate-Hazelnut Tarts:

  1. Using a stand mixer with a paddle attachment, combine flour, white and brown sugar, 2 teaspoons of the salt, butter, coconut oil, and 2 eggs until the dough begins to combine.
  2. Then add the water and mix on low for about one minute, you can increase the speed if needed at the end to make sure the dough forms into a smooth dough.  Then stop mixing.  Don’t overmix the dough.
  3. Divide the dough into 2 even balls and wrap in plastic.  Put in the refrigerator for 45 minutes or more.
  4. Mix the one remaining egg with 1/4 teaspoon of salt in a bowl and set aside.
  5. Lightly flour a large clean area and roll out one ball of dough to a 1/4 inch thick rectangle about 12 inches x 8 inches in size.
  6. Cut the dough into 8 rectangles, each 2×6 inches.  A pizza cutter may help with this.
  7. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper (wax paper).
  8. Preheat the oven for 375 degrees.
  9. Place the 8 rectangles on the baking sheet.
  10. Brush the dough with the egg wash.
  11. Spread one tablespoon of Nutella on each piece of dough.
  12. Follow the same process with the 2nd ball of dough.
  13. Place the 8 rectangles of dough on top of the ones on the baking sheet.
  14. Seal the sides by pressing a fork around the edges.
  15. Brush the tops with the egg wash.
  16. Bake for 17 minutes until golden brown.
  17. Allow to cool completely.

For Icing and Garnish:

  1. Mix sugar, lemon juice, and 1 tablespoon of milk in a bowl.
  2. Add more milk as needed until icing is smooth and can spread easily, but is not runny.
  3. Spread icing on each cool tart and sprinkle with bacon pieces or other decorations.
  4. Enjoy.
