Easy Irish Soda Bread Recipe

I love Irish Soda Bread!  This Easy Irish Soda Bread Recipe is the sweet version of the traditional recipe.

There are many soda bread recipes, but my family’s favorite is this sweet version made with butter and sugar. (Irish Soda Bread “American Style”).

This version gives you the option to kick it up a notch with the addition of Irish Whiskey.  If you really like whiskey, then go crazy and soak your raisins in whiskey as well.  You will have a true “Boozy Irish Soda Bread.”

You can opt to leave out the whiskey and make regular sweet Irish Soda Bread.

My daughters prefer soda bread without the raisins or whiskey.  My husband and son like soda bread with whiskey and raisins.  So change it up any way you want.

The basic recipe is based on King David’s Flour Soda Bread recipe, which is an easy and reliable recipe.

Easy Irish Soda Bread

This is a sweet soda bread recipe with butter, sugar, and raisins.  (The raisins and whiskey are optional.)

Sláinte!

  • Prep Time 10 Minutes
  • Cook Time 45 Minutes
  • Total Time 55 Minutes
  • Serves 8 People

Ingredients

  • 3 cups regular all purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • Heaping 1/2 cup of white sugar
  • 1/2 - 1 cup raisins or currants (optional) (can also opt to soak raisins in 2 tablespoons of whiskey)
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk (can use a little less if adding whiskey)
  • 5 tablespoons butter - melted
  • 1 egg
  • 1/8 cup whiskey (optional - can use 1/8 cup buttermilk instead)
  • Optional: coarse sugar to sprinkle on top of the loaf

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Mix all the dry ingredients (the first 6 ingredients on the list) in one bowl (this includes the sugar and the optional raisins) with a wisk or fork until well blended.
  3. Mix all the wet ingredients together in a separate bowl: buttermilk, egg, melted butter, and optional whiskey.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients.
  5. Gently and quickly, mix the ingredients together with a strong wooden spoon or spatula.
  6. You can add more buttermilk if it is too dry. The final batter will be wet and sticky.
  7. Spoon the batter into a 9x5 loaf pan lined with parchment paper (see photo above) or a greased 9x5 loaf pan to prevent sticking.
  8. Optional: Sprinkle the top of the loaf with coarse sugar to make a sweet crunchy crust.
  9. Bake at 350 degrees for 45-55 minutes. (50 works in my oven)
  10. You can insert a clean knife into the center of the loaf to test if it is done. The knife should come out clean when the loaf is done.
  11. Remove the loaf from the over. If you used the parchment paper, just remove the bread from the pan by lifting the parchment paper and cool on a wire rack so the bottom does not get soggy. If you greased the pan instead, you may need to use a butter knife to gently slide between the bread and the sides of the pan to loosen the loaf from the pan. You can then wrap the pan in a clean dish towel and turn the loaf pan upside down into the towel to remove the bread. Then cool the loaf on a wire rack.
  12. Wait about 10-15 minutes for it to set before cutting the bread. (This is hard to do because it smells really good!)
  13. You can eat it plain or with butter and jam and a cup of tea.
  14. Enjoy!

It made it last night. It came out great and my husband loved it! It’s a surprisingly sticky dough. I’ll make it again.
